When visiting Rusne, we also recommend not to pass by the monument for Mahatma Gandhi and Herman Kalenbach.
Did you know? In October 2015 in Rusne, a monument was unveiled to Mahatma Gandhi, a leader of India’s non-violent independence movement and Herman Kalenbach. Herman Kalenbach was a South African architect of Lithuanian Jewish origin, a Zionist and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, born in 1871 in Zemaitija Naumiestis.
H. Kalenbach met Mahatma Gandhi in 1904, and a few years later consistently began to support his activities: he became the main financial supporter of his activities, while also organising and participating in peaceful protests.
